Who Doesn’t Love Unicorns? Brush Baby Kids Electric Toothbrush

Unicorn Day 2021

A symbol of happiness, fantasy and wonder, unicorns are among the most famous mythical creatures ever! Born out of myth and legend, unicorns are as important to folklore as they are to modern-day storytelling.

We love unicorns as much as the next toddler! That’s why we’ve created our Sonic kids electric toothbrush with our very own flossy the unicorn! This electric toothbrush for children is perfect for your little one as it comes with a flashing light and a 2 minute toothbrush timer to keep your kids entertained!

Ever since the 12th century, the unicorn has been the national symbol of Scotland and represents strength, grace and freedom. Even the Celts, Romans and Persians believed in a magical white horse with a single horn.

So now we celebrate this cultural icon on the 9th of April each year because, let’s face it, who doesn’t love unicorns?

Out of myth, a legend is born

You can’t go far before seeing a unicorn these days, especially if you have children. From My Little Pony to Harry Potter, unicorns have become a pop culture icon. But where do unicorns come from? Let’s find out:

Narwhals

With their incredible, spiralling tusks, narwhals are thought to be the origin of the unicorn myth. Over the centuries, they have been safeguarded in churches from London to Krakow. You can even spot a couple of these ‘horns’ in the world-renowned Rijksmuseum in the Netherlands.

Treasured for their purifying and health-giving properties, the ‘horns’ were used to purify water and discover poisonous substances. You can see why unicorns, aka narwhals, were revered before modern medicine took over!

Ancient civilization

Unicorns surprisingly have existed since The Bronze Age. That’s over 4,000 years ago!

The ancient Greeks wrote about them in their accounts of natural history, including the philosopher Strabo, lawyer and author Pliny the Younger and the 6th-century traveller Cosmas Indicopleustes. The latter backing up the narwhal origins theory.

Unicorns are also depicted in the Bible and are described for their strength and ‘calf-like’ skipping nature.

European Folklore

Take a look at any unicorn depicted in the Middle Ages or Renaissance art, and you will notice a common theme - they are all white, majestic and look like a horse or goat-like creature with a horn. In literature, they are often described as a wild woodland animal that comes in times of need, while radiating light, purity and grace.

You can find examples of ‘unicorn horns’ dotted throughout the period. From the Late Antiquity to the French 13th Century authors such as Thibaut of Champagne and Richard de Fournival, unicorns have represented the Virgin Mary to chaste love and faithful marriage.

Pop culture explosion

My Little Pony is a pop culture phenomenon that has taken the world by storm. Colourful, bright and pure magic, Twilight Sparkle and her closest friends Rarity, Apple Blossom, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy go on magical adventures that celebrate their friendship.

Then there’s the boy who lived! You can’t go anywhere without hearing the name Harry Potter. In a magical world full of mythical creatures, you’ve guessed it; the unicorn lives there too!

From enchanted fairytales to the legendary Pegasus, unicorns cannot be ignored!

She’s not just one of our favourites either, she featured in The Telegraph’s 7 Best Electric Toothbrushes for kids list in 2018, and she’s been flying high ever since.

Flossy the Unicorn comes with a helpful 2 minute light timer to keep your little one’s brushing for the recommended daily time, morning and night.
