Wiggly Milestones: A Parent’s Guide to Losing Baby Teeth
Is that a wobbly tooth you spot during dinner? Congratulations - your little one has hit one of the most exciting early milestones: the great baby tooth wiggle!
Here at brush-baby, we know how big this moment is for both little ones and parents. Losing baby teeth is a major step in your child’s dental journey and it’s the perfect time to reinforce great habits with the right kids toothbrush, kids toothpaste, and even a fun reward from the Tooth Fairy!
Let’s dive into everything you need to know about this wiggly, giggly stage.
When Do Kids Start Losing Baby Teeth?
Most children lose their first baby tooth between ages 5 and 7, although every little one is slightly different. The lower front teeth usually go first, followed by the top front teeth. By age 12 or so, most kids will have their full set of adult teeth (aside from wisdom teeth, which come later).
So if your little one is proudly presenting you with a loose tooth, don’t panic! It means their permanent teeth are getting ready to shine!
Should You Pull a Loose Tooth?
It can be tempting to help that wiggly tooth along, but try to be patient. It’s best to let the tooth fall out naturally, which usually happens with a little wiggling over a few days or weeks. Encourage your child to gently move it with their tongue (not fingers!) to keep things hygienic.
If it’s really stubborn or causing discomfort, check in with your child’s dentist before pulling.
How to Care for New Teeth
As those shiny new adult teeth start to appear, it’s more important than ever to stick to a strong brushing routine. Here at brush-baby, we recommend:
Using a soft-bristled kids toothbrush or childrens electric toothbrush with a small head to clean those hard-to-reach places
Brushing for 2 minutes, twice a day, especially before bedtime.
Choosing a gentle but effective kids toothpaste with fluoride to strengthen enamel and protect against cavities.
Scheduling in regular dental check-ups every 6 month-1 year, to track development and keep that smile on the right track
Our WildOnes rechargeable kids electric toothbrushes are a huge hit with kids and make brushing exciting, complete with light-up heads, timers, and fun animal characters!
Baby Tooth Traditions
Losing a tooth can be both an exciting and an emotional event, filled with excitement, nerves and perhaps even a little fear.
Why not celebrate your little one losing their teeth with a fun tradition? Whether it’s a Tooth Fairy visit, a small treat, or a sticker chart, these little celebrations help turn a wiggly milestone into something that they will remember forever.
Pro tip: Keep a small tooth pillow or special container on hand so that tooth doesn’t get lost under the bed!
